I learnt to sail a few months before I took part in the British Steel Challenge race , the first race around the world against the prevailing wind and tides in 1992. I was out on a wayfarer in the solent blowing Force 6 and didn't know how to gybe to get back. Since then I have rounded Cape Horn, frozen in the Southern Ocean and been knocked flat in the North Pacific.
I have been working in the marine industry ever since as a Race officer for BT Global Challenge and Volvo Ocean Races. I started life in the WRNS as a Radio Operator.
As a Southsea resident I am really thrilled that my new venture, Boatshed Southsea, a Yacht Brokerage company, has kicked off this year with a flying start. It is a great opportunity and a fun business with lots of opportunities worldwide, but I chose my home port. Every boat I take on I will go and visit, meet the owner and take up to 70 photographs plus as much detailed information as possible. I'm not a salesman, what is great about our website is that customers can make up their own mind about whether to buy the boat because they can view every nook and cranny online. It's great fun because I love meeting lots of people who all have a passion for boats.
I settled in Southsea 6 years ago and not looked abaft once. Having worked at Boatshed for 18 months I was determined to start a Boatshed Franchised office in my home port, so to speak. I advise women in particular to check out their website www.boatshed.com and have a look at starting their own business in the industry.
We need more Women in the Marine Industry and I have always intended to help change that.
